Arnold homeowners learned what wind does to a roof on the night of March 14, 2025. The National Weather Service confirmed an EF-2 tornado that tracked 25 miles from just south of Morse Mill through Arnold and on to Mehlville, with peak winds of 115 miles per hour and a damage path 850 yards wide. The survey noted a home on Shelley Lynn Drive where the roof was torn off entirely. Rock Community Fire Protection District counted 352 damaged structures that weekend, with another 400 flagged for follow-up. Sections of Jeffco Boulevard were closed. Arnold Roof Permits, Explained
Arnold is one of the Jefferson County municipalities that requires a permit for some residential roof work. The City Council adopted the rule in July 2021, and it catches homeowners off guard because it does not apply to every job.
You generally need a $50 city permit when the work touches the structure or changes the roof covering: replacing plywood sheathing or structural components, adding a new feature to the roof, or switching materials, for example going from asphalt shingles to metal. A straight asphalt-to-asphalt replacement or a shingle patch generally does not trigger one. As the city put it when the rule passed, any time you touch the wood or change the cover material, that triggers the permit.
There is a second requirement that matters more than most homeowners realize. **Only contractors licensed by the City of Arnold may perform work in Arnold.** After a storm, out-of-town crews move through this area fast, and not all of them are licensed here. Before you sign anything, ask the contractor for their City of Arnold license.
