Porch Columns for St. Louis Homes
Porch columns frame your front entry, so when they peel, split or rot at the base, the whole house looks tired. AFCO makes architectural columns in the USA in both fiberglass and aluminum, in classical and modern profiles, with load-bearing designs for porches and entries. Casey Exteriors measures, orders and installs them to fit your home.

Signs Your Porch Columns Are Due
Wood columns take a beating from rain, sun and Missouri freeze and thaw. These are common problems with wood columns.
Rot at the base
Soft, dark or crumbling wood where the column meets the porch floor is the most common failure point.
Paint that will not hold
Peeling and bubbling paint that comes back every year usually means moisture is getting in.
Cracks and splits
Open seams and splits let water in, and they only get wider through winter.
A leaning post or sagging roofline
If the porch roof looks like it has dropped, have it looked at promptly. A column can be carrying more than it should.
Fiberglass and Aluminum Columns
AFCO builds its columns in both materials, so we can match the look, the load and the finish to your home. Every AFCO column is made in the USA.
FIBERGLASS COLUMNS
Formed from fiberglass composites that AFCO says resist rot, moisture and impact. Fiberglass columns come primed and ready to paint on site, in round and square profiles, with decorative capitals and bases.
- Pro-Cast, Pro-Fusion and Pro-Lite lines
- Classical, large format and square craftsman looks
- Factory primed, painted in the color you choose
ALUMINUM COLUMNS
Extruded aluminum with a factory applied powder coat finish in seven standard colors. AFCO says the finish never needs repainting, which suits a porch you want to stay low maintenance.
- Fluted and Traditions Series box columns
- Powder coat finish in seven standard colors, or primed
- Compatible with AFCO rail systems
Pro-Cast, Pro-Fusion and Pro-Lite
Each fiberglass line is built for a different look and scale. We help you choose at your estimate and measure so the order is right.
PRO-CAST
Centrifugally cast from fiberglass reinforced polymer, with authentic classical proportions drawn from Roman architecture.
- Smooth or fluted, tapered or non-tapered
- Fully structural, up to 20,000 lbs per AFCO
- Meets NFPA Class A flame spread and smoke requirements
- Wrap-around versions to fit existing posts
PRO-FUSION
AFCO’s spray-up fiberglass process gives the look of massive structural design without the weight. Made for larger homes and grand entries.
- Sizes up to 36 inch diameter and 30 foot height
- Fully load-bearing, up to 20,000 lbs per AFCO
- High impact resistance, lightweight to install
- Factory primed, ready to paint
PRO-LITE
Pultruded fiberglass in a slim, square profile for craftsman, coastal and low-country styles.
- Smooth or recessed panel profiles
- Fully load-bearing, up to 12,500 lbs per AFCO
- Works with AFCO Hurricane Brackets
- Factory primed, ready to paint
Load ratings are AFCO’s published figures, and AFCO notes that load capacity depends on distributing the load evenly over the bearing surfaces of the shaft. We confirm the right column for your porch roof before ordering.
Fluted Columns and the Traditions Series
AFCO’s aluminum columns are extruded for strength and dimensional accuracy, then finished with an AAMA-2604 powder coat in seven standard colors.
FLUTED ALUMINUM
Architecturally accurate fluting in the tradition of Greek and Roman columns, in a material that needs no painting.
- Round or square profiles in multiple heights
- Fully structural, up to 43,000 lbs depending on size, per AFCO
- Meets NFPA Class A flame spread requirements
- Optional Corinthian and Scamozzi capitals
TRADITIONS SERIES
The look of handcrafted box columns in maintenance free aluminum, in five profiles.
- Five box column designs, each fully load-bearing
- Seven powder coat finishes, or primer
- Designed to accommodate AFCO rail systems
- Interior or exterior use
Capitals, Bases and Hardware
The capital and base give a column its character, and the hardware is what makes it secure. AFCO makes both, and we handle the fit.
- Fiberglass capitals and bases in Tuscan, Doric, Corinthian and other styles, molded from polyurethane and fiberglass and factory primed
- Hurricane Bracket System for concealed structural reinforcement, engineered to ASCE 7-02 wind uplift requirements up to 150 mph
- Load-bearing plates that spread weight across the column footprint
- Wrap-around and split designs to cover existing posts, with a reassembly kit
- Railing compatibility with AFCO rail systems, if you are updating the whole porch
We Check What the Column Is Carrying
Some porch columns are decorative. Others hold up a roof. Before we order anything we look at what yours is supporting, because the right replacement depends on it.
- Load. AFCO publishes load ratings by line and size, and they assume the load is spread evenly over the shaft. We confirm the right column for your porch roof before ordering.
- Measurements. Height, width and base condition, including the floor or pier below.
- Surrounding wood. If the post base or beam shows rot, we flag it before it gets covered up.

What materials are AFCO columns made from?
AFCO makes architectural columns in fiberglass and in aluminum, in the USA. Its fiberglass lines are Pro-Cast, Pro-Fusion and Pro-Lite. Its aluminum lines are the fluted columns and the Traditions Series box columns.
Do I need to paint them?
It depends on the material. AFCO fiberglass columns come factory primed and are painted in the color you choose. AFCO aluminum columns come with a powder coat finish in seven standard colors, which AFCO says does not need repainting.
Can you replace a column that holds up my porch roof?
Yes, with care. AFCO publishes load ratings for its structural columns, and they depend on the load being spread evenly over the shaft. We look at what your column carries, confirm the right replacement for your porch roof, and flag any rot in the beam or post base before it is covered.
Can new columns wrap around my existing posts?
On some lines, yes. AFCO makes wrap-around versions designed to fit over existing posts. We check your posts at the estimate to see whether wrapping or replacing is the better fit.
Is there a warranty?
AFCO publishes written warranties for its fiberglass and aluminum columns. Ask us for the exact terms and we will get them in writing for you. Casey Exteriors also backs the installation with our own workmanship warranty.
