Windows Basics
Below are all the major types of windows.
Awning Windows
Awning windows are hinged at the top and crank from the bottom of the sash to open outward.
Basement Windows
Basement replacement windows, also called Hopper windows, open inward from the top and are typically installed in basement applications.
Bay Windows
Bay vinyl replacement windows consist of three windows in a single frame. The center lite is always twice as wide as the sidelites, which may consist of two operable casements or double hung windows.
Bow Windows
Bow replacement windows consist of 3, 4 or 5 windows in a single frame. All of the windows are equal size and provide a circular arch appearance.
Casement Windows
Casement replacement windows are hinged on the left or right and crank outward to a full 90-degree swing.
Double Hung Windows
Double hung replacement windows feature movable upper and lower sashes that tilt inward for easy cleaning.
Single Hung Windows
Single hung replacement windows feature a fixed top sash and movable bottom sash that tilts inward for easy cleaning.
Horizontal Sliding Windows
On slider windows, the sashes glide horizontally. Sliding windows are available in 2 or 3-lite configurations with the 3-lite horizontal sliding windows having operable end vents.
Picture Windows
Vinyl Picture windows, also called deadlites, have fixed sashes that do not open or close.

I'm Bill Casey, owner of Casey Exteriors; I've been in the home remodeling business for over 25 years.
I began in the 80's and worked for two different companies for a period of 11 years. I did both sales and installation, and learned from those experiences. In 1996, I opened Casey Exteriors. I took the good ideas I learned with me, and left the bad behind. I have been in business for myself for over 15 years.
